Missions
Mission
is an integral part of who we are at UPPC. Building on our history, we are
involved in life-changing ministries down the street, across town, and around
the world.
Check Out Gambell Presbyterian Church
UPPC
supports The Gambell
Presbyterian Church (PCUSA). Gambell, Alaska is a roadless Eskimo village.
It is only accessible by small plane. Everything from mail to canned food
has to be brought in by plane. The village is located in the north Bering
Sea 35 miles east of Siberia. The Gambell Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) has
a strong and constant presence in Gambell since 1894. The church serves
the subsistence community of 660.

Other News from the Missions Team

In June 2003 UPPC sent its 15th consecutive team to Piedras Negras, Mexico. We go to build a house, but we are there as missionaries to get to know the people in the neighborhood, to share our love of Jesus Christ with them. Team leader Jim Maxwell says, “…equally important as the physical improvement in the area are the relationships we have built with the Mexican people." We give our time and energy but receive far more in return.
Through its financial support, UPPC comes alongside many ministries in our local community which are transforming lives of kids at risk. One example: the Merle Palmer Scholarship Foundation has allowed more than 130 students to attend college over its 20-year history. Without this support these young people would have a bleak future; with it they are becoming the leaders of tomorrow.
Habitat for Humanity is changing lives of people in our community, and UPPC is part what makes it happen. Members work year around to make safe housing a reality, and participate in “Building on Faith” each September. In 2000 UPPC members built a house for the Lam family who came to Tacoma from Cambodia in 1993. Homeowner Dem Lam says today “Habitat for Humanity has changed my life. They have given me peace, security and self respect, and my children can lay their heads down at night in warmth and safety and wake up in the land of opportunity.”
